A Brief History of Maribor in Slovenia

Maribor has an interesting history. It was first mentioned as a castle in 1164. It was then mentioned as a settlement in 1209 and, subsequently, as a city in 1254. The Habsburg Empire ruled it until 1918, after which it joined the Kingdom of Serbia to form the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Then in 1991, Maribor became part of independent Slovenia after a 10-day war of independence. In 2012, the city was named European Capital of Culture.

You can also enjoy wine tasting at the old vine house. They have a variety of options to suit your tastes and how many you want to try. We enjoyed tasting three locally produced white wines. After tasting, you can purchase a bottle or more of the wines or enjoy a drink on their outside seating.

  2. The Old Vine is very impressive.. didn’t know vines can grow so old. Also.. your post reminded me that vast parts of Europe were overrun by Turks in the not so distant past, it’s so easy to forget, I find.

I’ll make sure to stop at Gostilna Anderlič for a bite when in the area. The medieval town centre of Maribor looks outrageously beautiful, so might put this town high up on our list.

  3. A 400 year old vine and wine tasting. That’s enough for me but it seems there is so much more to the town. Nothing better than relaxing with a local brew watching people in the square. Great post.
