Best Places to Watch The Sunset in Trieste, Italy & Take Photos

Sunset is a fantastic time of day to see Trieste in Italy, all lit up, and can be a photographer’s dream. One of the best places to see the sunset is along the coast, especially on the pier at Molo Audace, which extends into the Adriatic Sea. Molo Audace is a 200 m-long stone pier in Trieste, built in 1751.

Sunset Crowds

Late in the day, the pier becomes a hive of activity with people out to watch the sun setting. Many people bring a picnic from a local deli or some wine to enjoy the spectacle. Watching the sunset is one of the top things to do in Trieste.

What Time are Sunsets in Italy

Waterfront at Sunset

The best way to check sunrise and sunset times in Trieste and Italy is to ask your favourite search engine or use your weather app on a smartphone. Identifying a great day to see the low suns is trickier. Clear skies or those marked with partial cloud cover often deliver the best results. Apparently, wispy clouds towards the end of the day create quite the red light spectacle. Basically, you can stack the cards in your favour. However, sometimes things are down to luck.

Sunset Photos in Trieste

Although my visit to Trieste, Italy, was short, I enjoyed the red skies and took some fantastic photos of the late sun.

Looking at the sun setting is fantastic; however, if you look behind you, the sun often lights things up. In Trieste, the sunset really lit up the waterfront architecture and clouds above. The seafront architecture is fantastic at any time of day, but the red skies enhanced the views even more.

Adriatic Sea Sunset

Trieste is a popular cruise ship destination; however, the docks they moor up at are in a fantastic place for the late sun. From the pier, the low sun lights up the ships, making for great photos. I imagine the decks on the boats are a fantastic spot, too.

Pier and boats at dusk

Another fantastic place to watch the spectacle is on the Grand Canal. There are loads of places to sit, including bars overlooking the water.

Canal Sunset

The sun also lights up the other buildings alongside the Grand Canal during the golden hour. It also creates some brilliant colours on the water.

Pier at Sun Down

The pier becomes quite a social affair during the late sun and seems to attract quite the crowd. Many people were enjoying food and wine while sitting and watching one of Mother Nature’s gifts.

Palazzo Carciotti is a unique building on the waterfront of Trieste, Italy, with a green dome. During the golden hour, the building certainly catches the sunlight. The last act of the sunset is for the light to drop past the horizon, and, in Trieste, it turns the sea red. The boats on the horizon can make for some interesting photos.

  1. Sunset in Trieste epitomizes so many of our Italian daydreams! Gathering at the pier with friends and family to watch that sun sinking into the sea seems like the perfect ending to any day. Great photos, and great fodder for our wanderlust. 🙂

  2. Wow what a gorgeous group of shots. I often find myself checking the clock 30 minutes before sundown wherever I am in the world then scanning the horizon for clouds and some sun. Seems to be the best combo for stunning sunsets.
