Ideas For Lake Holidays in Central Europe with Swimmable Lakes

There are many places for lake holidays throughout Central Europe, including some in rather picturesque locations. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy some scenic lakeside holidays in a few Central European countries: Slovenia, Hungary, and Croatia.

Lakes are fantastic places to unwind and enjoy the views. You can also do some freshwater swimming, which I think is more pleasant than in the sea. Lakes also have opportunities for water sports, including kayaking.

Lake Holiday Destinations in Central Europe

Lake Bled in Slovenia

Lake Bled Day Trip

Lake Bled is one of Slovenia’s top tourist attractions and an ideal destination for a lakeside holiday at any time of year. The summer is the most popular season, as it is for many other destinations in Europe. However, autumn and spring are splendid, lovely times for hiking in the nearby countryside. During the winter, many of the mountains nearby are snow-covered, and the ski resorts kick into action.

There’s lots to see at Lake Bled, including some hiking routes around the edge of the water. You can also take part in water sports or go on a boat trip to the island. Overlooking the lake is Bled Castle, which is fascinating, and the views from the battlements are sublime.

Dog Friendly Lake Bled

There are options for holiday homes and hotels with lake views, and many more within walking distance. The lakeside area has many bars and restaurants, ideal for sitting and chilling.

Lake Balaton in Hungary

Szigliget a Village on Lake Balaton

A top place to visit in Hungary is Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. There are many resorts and towns on the shores. Balaton is a popular holiday destination for Hungarians (the seaside of Hungary). We spent most of our time in the area around Keszthely and Szigliget, which were both great destinations on the lake’s shore.

Libás Strand - Beach

The lake is suitable for sailing, SUP, kayaking and swimming. Swimming was great fun, and the temperature was fine in June and early September when we visited. You can also go fishing on a boat or cast a rod from the shore. Visitors can also cycle on the lakeside. To the north of the lake are mountains and hills, many of which are home to vineyards.

Watersports at Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton has small villages, cities and party destinations on its shores. Public transport connects most of these, including trains and coaches. You can reach many places at the lake on a direct train from the capital, Budapest. The waterside is also brilliant for dog walking and has some dog-friendly beaches.

Jezero Sabljaci near Ogulin in Croatia

Jezero Sabljaci boats

Jezero Sabljaci is a vast lake, roughly an hour’s walk from Ogulin, and it’s a perfect place for wild swimming. It is also very good for a hike or for just sitting and admiring the mountains. There is also a yacht club at Jezero Sabljaci. As a bonus for swimmers, they do not permit powered boats on the lake. The views from around the lake are special, perfect for sitting, relaxing and taking it all in.

Jezero Sabljaci - Lake Holiday

On my visit in June, the water was a good temperature for me. About 10 metres offshore, it got deep, and the water was clear. You’ll find pleasant restaurants nearby, as well as a variety of holiday homes. Jezero Sabljaci is a scenic village, and I would not hesitate to book a holiday home here.

Fužine in Croatia

Lake Fuzine

Another place we’ve stayed was Fužine, a small village in Croatia with artificial lakes. They have dedicated areas to swim. The lakes are ideal for hiking around, including towards the nearby caves.
