Free ATM Cash Withdrawals Using Revolut in Romania

This is a guide to choosing which banks to use to get free ATM cash withdrawals in Romania with a Revolut account. Sometimes it’s not possible in certain places. So I’m including details on cash withdrawal fees for ATMs across Romania.

Bucharest Architecture

Overall, there are free ATM options in most towns and cities. I’ve tested these free ATMs in various cities, including Brașov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest and Constanța.

Is Cash Important in Romania?

Despite what people on forums say, cash is still king and essential in Romania. Many bars, restaurants, and shops only accept cash payments in Lei, so having some is pretty important. Also, paying on board buses, taxis, and trains seems to be mostly a cash-only affair.

As a rough guide, £1 has tended to translate into between 5.5 and 6 Lei over the last few years.

Free ATMs in Romania And Other Fees

I’ve spent well over a year in Romania and have a good grasp on which ATMs will charge me. These are ATMs I’ve used that the bank hasn’t charged me for.

Cash Romania

This includes Brasov, Constanta, Bucharest, Mamaia and Cluj-Napoca, to name a few. My first search on Google Maps is to find the nearest BRD bank branch, as they seem to have many convenient locations for cash withdrawals.

BRD

BRD has many ATMs across the country, and I’ve found them great for free withdrawals with Revolut. I’ve used them a lot in Brasov, and Cluj-Napoca in particular.

The only downside of them is that you can only withdraw set amounts between 20 lei and 900 lei. So, to withdraw the required amount, you need some mental gymnastics or to pull out the calculator.

Garanti Bank

Free ATM Brasov Romania

I haven’t seen many Garanti Bank ATMs. However, in Brasov, near the dog-friendly restaurant L’Altra Idea, I needed to try them out. I withdrew a few hundred lei and was happy to report that they charged me nothing for cash withdrawals.

CEC Bank

Another ATM I’ve used to withdraw cash for free a few times in Romania is CEC Bank. The machine was simple to use and had various language options, including English. They have quite a few branches in the country, including in Brasov; they have a handy one in the main square. CEC Bank has a web page to help you find a local branch. Overall, a good bank with some prime locations.

BCR

Another bank that doesn’t charge for ATM withdrawals with a Revolut account is BCR. Banca Comercială Română is a Romanian bank with branches nationwide. It is one of Romania’s major banks and a subsidiary of the Erste Banking Group.

BCR Free ATM Brasov

These are easy to find, I’ve found; however, some of their older machines can be temperamental unless you use the tap feature. They have a useful page for locating nearby branches and ATMs on their website.

ING Free ATMs Brasov

Another ATM that I tried with my Visa card to withdraw cash was at ING in the shopping mall in Brasov. This machine charged no fees, which was nice. ING has bank branches and ATMs throughout Romania. They have a map of their branches on their contact page, which is handy.

Techventures Bank in Sibiu

Free ATM Sibiu

During my recent visit to Sibiu Christmas markets, I discovered the Techventures Bank near the city centre. They are in a pretty cool building. However, even better was that the ATM was free to use.

Bank of Transylvania – BT

Another popular bank throughout the country is BT, or The Bank of Transylvania. I’ve used these in various places and successfully got free ATM withdrawals with my Revolut Visa card. This includes Bucharest, Brasov and Mamaia. The Bank of Transylvania has lots of ATMs throughout the country, apparently over 500. They have a handy webpage to help you find the nearest.
