Is York Worth Visiting For A Historic City Break

York is a fantastic historic city to visit in northern England. On our recent visit, we stayed for just over 24 hours; however, I’ve visited a few times before. It’s a beautiful place with a rich history and great food options, including roast dinners with the local favourite, Yorkshire pudding.

Top attractions in York include the Shambles, a historic street; the city walls; and the famous York Minster Cathedral. There are also many other interesting sights to visit in the city. We enjoyed our recent 24 hours in the city and would have loved to spend much longer. During our stay, I managed to enjoy the city at sunrise, on a sunny day, and on a spooky early-morning walk through the eerie streets.

Why Is York Worth Visiting?

Shambles at Night

There are many options for things to do in York, enough to fill a day or more. There are also many guided tour options, including ghost walks on the GetYourGuide and Viator websites. The city is home to the impressive York Minster, a must-visit.

The Shambles is beautiful, with shops and fascinating buildings. I also enjoyed walks along the river, exploring the city walls and seeing lots of historic architecture. During my early morning walk, I enjoyed the spooky vibe of the city’s many medieval buildings and narrow passageways.

City Walls & Tower

There were many museums and experiences to choose from in the city, but we chose carefully this time as time was limited. Another unique aspect of the city is the independent shops scattered throughout the centre. We enjoyed visiting quite a few, including some off-the-wall places.

Food & Drink

The city is blessed with many nice places to dine out or enjoy a beer. This includes lots of pubs, many of which we tried. As we were short on time, we mostly ate takeout, including delicious pies, a Yorkshire roast dinner, and fish & chips.

Where to Stay?

When researching our stay in York, there were lots of options, including on Booking.com. We also spotted many dog-friendly options out of habit, even though Henry is not travelling with us this time. Price always wins with us, so we opted for the Travelodge in the centre near the Ouse Bridge.

Travelodge York

The Travelodge was, as expected, clean and functional, with everything you’d expect from a budget chain. For this stay, we opted to pay extra for early check-in so as not to waste limited time sitting around with a suitcase.

York is a wonderful city with many interesting facets. The iconic places of interest are famous for a reason and were well worth seeing. Its historic vibe enhanced my enjoyment of spending time here. The river also added to the experience; it was a great place for a time-out and to enjoy nature and the autumnal colours.

Another thing that enhanced our stay was the consistently good local food that we enjoyed. Finally, the pubs we visited were varied and lovely, and a great place to rest during a time-limited autumn visit to York. It was well worth returning after 25 years, but when we return, it will be a longer stay with a minimum of 3 nights in the city.
