The Shambles: A Famous Medieval Street In York

One of the most popular sights in York, England, is The Shambles. It features lots on social media, where people strive to take the best photos of the street. It is a pretty place with lots of medieval buildings to see, most of which are now used as shops and places for food. The Shambles in York is a historic medieval street, dating back over 900 years, and was originally home to the city’s butchers.

Medieval Shambles

Meat was displayed on shelves called “shambles”, and the street’s narrow design helped keep it cool before refrigeration existed. Many buildings on the street have iconic overhanging timber-framed structures dating to the 14th and 15th centuries.

Little Shambles

I enjoyed exploring here in the daytime and visiting some of the fascinating shops on the street. This included an excellent pie shop and those selling mystical products. Visiting at night was excellent, and having the entire street to myself at 5 am was pretty epic.

What’s at the Shambles in York

Sightseeing Shambles

As it is one of the most popular attractions in York, you will find lots of interesting things to see in the street. The sum of the parts is the main feature, and the medieval street is wonderful to see up close.

The Shop That Shall Not Be Named

The Shop That Must Not Be Named is an independent store in The Shambles specialising in officially licensed Harry Potter merchandise. It offers a wide range of products, including replica wands, figures, clothing, homeware, and collectables. Inside the shop, there is a magical atmosphere with wizard-themed decor and staff in costume.

The Shop That Must Not Be Named

It is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM; however, there is often a queue to get inside. We enjoyed a quick look around inside, but were too busy to enjoy it. They also have a cool window display, which is especially nice to see when it’s dark.

York Vikings

York Vikings is a pretty unique shop to pop into while on the Shambles. They sell lots of Viking-related merchandise, which is pretty cool. What caught my eye was the Viking-themed tankards, and my wife liked their jewellery collection.

The Society of Alchemists

Another shop I enjoyed visiting was the Society of Alchemists, which had lots of interesting things to see but nothing I needed. The Society of Alchemists is a unique shop inspired by the mystique of alchemy. They sell various products like perfumes, body care items, candles, and other lifestyle curiosities. The shop looks like an alchemist’s lair, with mystical symbols and treasures.

Shambles Market

Just off the famous street is The Shambles Market, which also has many historic buildings at its edges. It was a nice place to mooch around and buy food and supplies.

We enjoyed seeing the food at the open-air market and various stalls selling art. There were also street food vendors at the edge, which were handy for a quick drink away from the main street.

St Crux Church At The Bottom

St Crux

At the bottom of the street is St Crux, a parish hall and a former church. The site has a history dating back to the Domesday Book of William the Conqueror, the Norman king. The current church incorporates the remains of the medieval building. During my visit, I saw it at night, which was special, and during the daytime, they had an interesting owl display on.

The Shambles Sausage & Pie Company

The Shambles Sausage & Pie Company is a fantastic pie shop with lots of options to choose from. If I had stayed longer, I could have tested the entire menu. I really enjoyed their warm York egg and pork pie, which was delicious.

Monk Bar Chocolatiers

If you like chocolates, then Monk Bar Chocolatiers is a perfect shop to pop into when exploring the medieval street. They sell a fantastic range of high-quality handmade chocolate and chocolate shots. Their dark chocolate truffles were fantastic; however, my wife would have loved to try the entire collection.

Fudge Kitchen

Before I gave up eating sugar, I used to be partial to some fresh artisan fudge. The Fudge Kitchen on the Shambles was pretty special. They have loads of options for sale, including chocolate and fruit flavours. You can also watch it being made fresh in the shop. My wife enjoyed a box with three types and thought it was the best fudge she had ever had.

Busy in the daytime and lit up nicely at night is the Shambles Kitchen. This is a wonderful sandwich shop that is a great place for lunch or a snack while exploring. They have some great options for smoked meat sandwiches. Their smoked beef sandwich, called The Guy Fawkes, was excellent, and I enjoyed eating it in a nearby churchyard.
