Dog Friendly Restaurants, Accommodation & Beaches in Split
Visiting Split in Croatia with a dog is great fun, as it’s a pretty dog-friendly city and there are lots of things to see and do. Split is a city on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia with a history dating back to Roman times. Thus, there are lots of historic buildings and sites to see while dog walking. Also, as it is on the coast, it has many beaches and coastal walks for visitors to enjoy.

Split and Croatia have a fantastic bar and cafe scene, and throughout the day, people are out socialising, especially when the sun is out. There are many locals and visitors out and about with their pets, too.

Split is popular with tourists and can get busy; however, our February visit had some lovely weather, and the city was rather quiet and very enjoyable to explore. We have subsequently revisited the city and have found many new places that allowed Henry to visit.
Tips – If your dog loves to chase cats, then you might want to keep them on a lead, as there are lots of cats in the city. Also, it gets rather hot at times; thus, carry enough water to keep your dog cool and hydrated.

We found most bars and restaurants in Split to be dog-friendly, and those that are not have clearly marked red signs. Alfresco drinking and dining are popular in the city, and most outdoor seating areas are pet-friendly.
Basta

Basta is a friendly bar on the seafront with sea-facing seats. It’s dog-friendly and often has many canine guests. They have comfy seating both inside and outside, and are a great place to hang out. Basta also has Wi-Fi and is a popular spot with remote workers. They have both local and continental beer options, and their food is good.
Submarine Burger

In the old town near the Venetian tower is Submarine Burger, a nice place for lunch out or some craft beer. They welcome dogs in the outdoor seating area or their indoor dining room. They also have a water bowl at the entrance, which is handy. As a bonus, their burgers are delicious. I enjoyed the double barbecue option and it was washed down with some Garden Brewery craft beer.
Adriatic Grašo

Adriatic Grašo is a very nice restaurant with views that overlook the marina. Adriatic Grašo were great with our dog Henry on our visit. They serve good food and beer here and have a great vibe. Thus, it’s a great option for food when on a dog walk on the coast path. We enjoyed octopus salad and a fish soup for lunch here.
Bobis

Bobis is a cafe-bar that is in the courtyard of the beautiful Trg Republike. They welcome many canine guests in their outside seating area and the covered area, too.

They serve great coffee and some of the cheapest beer in Split. The views from Bobis are superb, and you can see the sea and the beautiful architecture of Trg Republike.
Kavanazona

Just outside Split on the coast path is Kavanazona, a great restaurant and bar. They are right next to Boćalište Zvončac, a fantastic place to exercise your dog. The park has many dogs playing, and the bar attracts many canine guests. Next to the nearby marina is a tiny shale beach that is handy for a quick paddle.

Kavanazona overlooks a marina and a small bay; thus, its outside seating area is a great place to relax. They serve good beer, including some interesting wheat beer options. Their food is rather special too, including sharing platters of local seafood. They welcomed Henry and brought him a bowl of dog water on each visit.
Teak Food & Bar

Another place with plenty of canine guests is Teak Food & Bar in the old town area. Teak Food & Bar has a lovely covered outside seating area, which is rather comfy. They have a range of drinks available, including draught beer, which I very much enjoyed. They also have a nice food menu with sections for breakfast, burgers and other grilled dishes. I really enjoyed relaxing here in the shade.
Café Kala

If you’re looking for a nice drink in any weather, Cafe Kala is a good option. They allow pets inside and outside. Their inside is nice and is quite the locals’ bar when I visited. They also have a terrace in a small courtyard with views of the old town architecture. The Cafe Kala drinks menu is good, and on my visit I opted for Vukovarsko, a local beer which I really enjoy, especially early doors.
Dog-Friendly Places to Stay in Split
There are lots of pet-friendly accommodation options in Split and the nearby area. You can easily find these using the pets-allowed filter on Booking.com and then select your other requirements. This includes hotels and self-catering accommodation.
Anthea Apartments

Near the farmers’ market and Diocletian’s Palace is Anthea Apartments. Anthea Apartments is a handy place with plenty of space. The apartment has a big bedroom, a kitchen and a nice bathroom. They are a pet-friendly place to stay, and the host was friendly with the dog. The kitchen had all I needed to cook some superb meals, and the dining table was a good size.

Anthea Apartments is a great place for late-night dog walks and is easy to get to the old town area of Split. There are also lots of handy shops nearby, including two medium-sized supermarkets.
Fabo Apartments

Fabo Apartments are in a lovely location near the centre of Split. They are in a quiet neighbourhood with lots of cute, narrow streets. The property is close to the viewpoint on Marjan Hill, a fantastic place for dog walks. The apartment is pet-friendly, and the hosts were very welcoming to canine guests. They even brought the dog a few pillows to use as a bed.

The apartment is on the small side; however, it uses space well with a double bed, a kitchen, a dining table and a shower room. They also have a table outside in the front garden, which is ideal for alfresco dining. The host was great and refreshed the towels frequently.

As a pleasant touch, she brought us a bottle of wine to mark Valentine’s Day. Overall, this was a cute and cosy place to stay.
Parks & Walks For Dogs in Split
There are countless places to walk with the dog in Split, from coastal paths to some pleasant areas of parkland. Some of the local beaches are dog-friendly; others have faded “no dogs” signs, which locals seem to ignore. I’m very much of the philosophy, do as the locals do when travelling. There are also options for tours and activities on the GetYourGuide website.
Riva

Riva is the main boardwalk in the centre of Split and is a lovely palm tree-lined area next to the sea. It’s a great place for walks and a good place to meet other dogs. Most of the bars and cafes in Riva are pet-friendly and have outside seating. Many bars are open all day until late, and their outdoor areas are very welcoming to canine guests, including water bowls.
Coastal Walk

From Split city centre, you can walk in both directions along the coast, and it’s popular with dog walkers. The areas near the centre are busy, but once you get out of the city, it gets quieter. These paths take you to some lovely, quiet beaches, many of which dogs seem to be allowed on.
Marjan Hill

The main park in the city is Marjan Hill, which is a massive place with splendid views. There are countless trails for hiking and dog walking on the hill, and the views from above are fantastic. There are a few bars for refreshments while walking on the hill, and other interesting things to see. The Marjan Park rule board states that dogs should be kept on a lead; however, many people didn’t.
Bacvice Beach

Just past the cruise port and train station is Bacvice Beach, a lovely, shallow beach. Bacvice Beach is a sandy beach which is popular with people walking their dogs; however, signs show that dogs are not permitted at certain times. There are some friendly bars that overlook the beach, all of which welcome pets in their outside seating areas.
Kasjuni Beach – Dog Friendly

Kasjuni Beach is a more remote beach and is a fantastic trek out of the town centre. You can also reach Kasjuni Beach by crossing Marjan Hill on a longer walk. Kasjuni Beach is one of the official dog-friendly beaches and is a rather nice place to visit.

The beach is shallow and is a great place for swimming. There are shaded areas to keep your dog cool, and the views are sublime.
Plaža Kaštelet

Another beach we visited with the dog was Plaža Kaštelet. The beach is split into two parts, with a nice walkway to the sea. The beach was deserted except for other dog walkers on our visit. The beach is shale; thus, if you plan to paddle, I recommend some water shoes or flip-flops. To reach the beach, it is a 30-minute walk along the coast path.
Getting to Split With a Dog
The best way to reach Split in Croatia with a dog is by train via Zagreb. It is a 6-hour journey starting in the afternoon, and the route is beautiful. Sadly, the international coaches don’t permit canine passengers. For local transportation, many buses permit dogs to travel.
Pet Shops
Many of the supermarkets in the city centre stock some dog food; however, there are a few pet shops nearby too. Many dogs have special dietary requirements, and I found Životinjski Svijet to be the nearest with great options. They had some interesting options for dogs with sensitive tummies. Životinjski Svijet also stocked a variety of other pet supplies.

I love how you travel around with your dog! And Split looks so welcoming.
