Sibiu Christmas Markets 2026: Târgul de Crăciun din Sibiu

Sibiu is a pretty city in Romania’s Transylvania region and a wonderful place to visit for the Christmas market. Sibiu’s old upper town is beautiful, with many historic buildings that make a fantastic backdrop for the festive markets. The town’s main square, Piața Mare, is home to the annual Christmas market, Târgul de Crăciun din Sibiu. The 2026 edition runs from 13th November 2026 to 3rd January 2027.

The stalls mostly sell food, drinks, and regional or festive gifts. Some are rather unique, while others sell the usual festive market products. For drinks, they have mulled drinks, wines, and other hot drink options. The stalls and rides are open each day from mid-morning until well after dark. This is one of many good Christmas markets in Romania.

Ferris Wheel

Ferris Wheel

A small Ferris wheel sits in the corner of the main square and runs day and night. It offers great views of the picturesque square and the festive decorations below. They charge per person, and you get two goes around.

Ice Rink

Ice Rink Christmas Market

One of the most popular attractions was the ice rink, set in a pretty setting. Ice rinks are popular at festive events throughout Europe, and Sibiu is no different. In addition to skates, they have stabilisers for less confident skaters. Festive music from the ice rink can be heard throughout the town square.

Santa’s Grotto

Santa's Grotto

A good festive market needs Santa’s grotto so children can tell him what they want for Christmas if they’ve been good. Santa’s grotto is rather photogenic, and Santa looked pretty friendly sitting on his sleigh.

Carousel

Carrousel Sibiu

What’s a funfair without a carousel? Sibiu has a nice one that runs all day in the heart of the square. People seemed to enjoy their rides while I munched on some festive food.

Christmas Train Ride

Another children’s ride that caught my eye was the train. This had some wonderful on-theme decorations and looked fun for young people. It’s also pretty photogenic, which was a big plus for me.

The Christmas Tree

Christmas Tree

The market has a mock Christmas tree as its centrepiece, nicely decorated. Personally, I prefer actual trees like the one in the Brașov Christmas market.

Christmas at the Palace

Christmas at the Palace is another attraction in Sibiu during the festive period. Sadly, it was closed when I visited. However, the courtyard looked great.

Food, Drink and Gift Stalls at Sibiu Christmas Market

Târgul de Crăciun din Sibiu has loads of stalls in Piața Mare selling gifts, local food, and refreshments. Some interesting Romanian and Transylvanian products were on sale. These stalls caught my eye.

Vin Fiert

Vin fiert is the Romanian name for mulled wine, a popular Christmas market drink across Europe. To attract attention, some stalls are particularly unique.

Festive Market Gifts

Many stalls also sell unique gifts, including Transylvanian crafts. They make these festive-themed products in the nearby town of Deva.

Cheese

For cheese lovers, Torockoi has a stall showcasing all their cheeses. They are a cheese producer from Romania’s Transylvania region and offer quite a range to choose from. I love seeing local food producers more than the corporate stalls that seem prevalent at festive events.

Chocolate Stalls

Some rather interesting chocolate stalls throughout the market offer a whole host of options. They range from plain chocolates to more adventurous flavours.

Langos

There were quite a few places to buy lángos, a famous Hungarian street food. A large Hungarian community in Transylvania is reflected in the stalls. Lángos is deep-fried bread, often served with cheese and sour cream. I find it delicious and very filling.

Jams and pickles

One of my favourite stalls in the festive markets sells preserves. They sell jams, chutney-like jars and zacusca, to name a few. They have some interesting options, including garlic jam.

Despite giving up sugar, I spotted various great-looking sweet treats that the former RJ would have loved. Chocolate kebabs and chocolate bubbles were certainly tempting.

Chocolate gifts

For those who want to take chocolate treats home, they had some nice artisan chocolates. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Grilled Food

Rather than dining out at one of the restaurants in the city, they have a fantastic grill serving roasted and grilled meats. This includes some tasty bratwurst and pork knuckles. This stall opened early, which was great for a breakfast stop before sightseeing for me. Thumbs up for the sausages and cabbage salad.

Socks and hats

Winter is mighty cold in the country, so warm socks and hats are pretty important. Some stalls sell colourful, decorative options.

Other Christmas Features of Sibiu in Romania

Christmas Tree Sibiu

In addition to the Târgul de Crăciun din Sibiu in Piața Mare, the town has many other festive decorations. The smaller square, Piața Mică, also has a wonderful Christmas tree and festive stalls.

Restaurant Leon

Many of the city’s shops and restaurants also have pretty decorations, which are lovely to see when perusing the historic centre.

Christmas Orthodox Cathedral

Christmas wouldn’t be what it is without the church, and Sibiu’s churches deliver. The Orthodox cathedral is a pretty place to visit, with a beautiful tree near the high altar. This is a very active place of worship and can get quite busy at certain times.

Saint Mary Evangelical Cathedral

The iconic Saint Mary Evangelical Cathedral, one of the city’s main attractions, also features some fine decorations in the nave. Its floating decor inside really added to the festive vibe. The cathedral is lovely to explore, including climbing its unique spire.

Is Târgul de Crăciun din Sibiu Worth Visiting?

Festive Stalls

Sibiu is a wonderful place to visit, especially during the winter holidays and the Christmas markets. The city is beautiful, which is its primary draw. The festivities throughout the town certainly add to the vibe. There is great festive food, lots of decorations, and an overall upbeat vibe.

Sibiu Christmas Market Romania

I visited on a day trip from Brașov, which was great; however, I would have loved to stay the night to see all the decorations after dark. If you plan to stay, there are many accommodation options in the city on Booking.com.
