Tried & Tested Bars & Restaurants in Sibiu, Romania

I really enjoyed eating and drinking out on several visits to Sibiu, Romania. This included some nice bars and restaurants. I found plenty of places to eat or drink in the city. I’m on my third visit to the city and have visited during summer, winter, and autumn.

Fain Restaurant

The city centre has lots of restaurants, including many that serve traditional Romanian cuisine. You can find cool coffee shops and bars if you just want to stop sightseeing for a drink.

Tried and Tested Bars & Restaurants in Sibiu

Some tried-and-tested places to dine or drink out while visiting Sibiu, including some dog-friendly establishments. Many have outdoor seating with a view during the warmer months.

La Cuptor Restaurant

In the lower town, a short walk downhill from the little square, is La Cuptor Restaurant. La Cuptor Restaurant is a delightful place to dine out, and it very much impressed me. They have a terrace to the rear of their building and a posh indoor dining area. We chose the indoor area, as it was a bit cold and pouring rain. One cool feature is the big clay oven; ‘cuptor’ means a traditional clay oven, which is where the place gets its name.

La Cuptor Drinks

La Cuptor has an excellent drinks menu, including craft beer, wines, and cocktails. They also have non-alcoholic drinks, including mocktails. We had cocktails and some Transylvanian Csíki Sör. Their food menu features lots of clay-oven dishes and is impressive. The only downside was deciding what to eat. One notable dish was their beef marrow appetiser, which looked great as it passed by, and I regret not ordering it.

La Cuptor Pork Knuckle

For food, I tried their crispy suckling pork knuckle, which comes with some interesting sides. These included horseradish foam, creamy potato croquettes, and zacusca cream. Overall, La Cuptor was a fantastic place for a meal with good service and great value.

Rabbit Hole & Soup

One of my favourite meals out in the city was at Rabbit Hole & Soup. Rabbit Hole & Soup is a pleasant restaurant with seating overlooking the gorgeous Piata Mare, the town’s main square. We dined out here with the dog and had a 2-course meal.

To start, we all opted for soups, including beef goulash and ciorba de burta, a traditional Romanian soup. These were all tasty, and I was impressed with the flavour of the goulash. The main courses were equally tasty. I had a ham hock with cabbage and horseradish sauce, which was filling and tasted great. On a subsequent visit, I ate their sarmale cabbage rolls and Ciorbă de burtă.

Beer In Sibiu Main Square

As a bonus, they served local beer by SB. I drank a few bottles of the SB blonde, which was refreshing with a slight hoppy flavour.

La Turn Restaurant

Near the tower between the two epic squares in the city is La Turn, an excellent restaurant. La Turn is a nice venue with indoor and covered outdoor seating; we sat outside and thought the inside was pretty. For drinks, we had some Romanian beers and soft drinks.

To start, we chose soups, and their goulash soup was delicious; I spiced mine up with a side of hot chilli, which hit the spot. The bowl had loads of beef chunks and plenty of dumplings. For the main course, I had their duck leg with mashed potatoes and some fantastic berry sauce.

Leon Restaurant

Leon Restaurant

On the beautiful Strada Balcescu is Leon Restaurant, a pleasant place for food and drink. They have both inside dining and a covered outside seating area. They were nicely decorated both inside and outside. The servers were friendly and efficient. I drank a few beers here while sightseeing on my way between the Saxon towers and the Orthodox cathedral.

Restaurant Gothic/Amber Cafe

Restaurant Gothic Sibiu

In Piata Mare, there are many restaurants, including the seemingly dog-friendly Restaurant Gothic. During my visit, a few people were out with pets on the covered terrace. They have an extensive menu with traditional Transylvanian food and some other choices too.

Restaurant Gothic

I enjoyed their house burger served with bacon- and cheese-topped baked potatoes. This was delicious and hit the spot for me. It was my first burger in a while, and I was impressed. For drinks, I had Ciuc, a Romanian beer.

Restaurant Baroc Cafe

Restaurant Baroc Cafe is a good place for a meal out, overlooking Piața Mică. Their outside seating area has comfy seats and wonderful views, and they welcome dogs. They open early in the square, so it’s a great place for breakfast. We visited for brunch and ordered beer, coffee, and food.

They offer a range of drinks, including local and continental beers. Their food menu is diverse, including a breakfast platter with cold cuts of meat and cheese.

  1. I love the designs of these restaurants. My grandfather – raised in Transylvania before moving to the States (cue the vampire jokes) – used to make meat seasoned in garlic, then grilled, which was the best meat I have enjoyed. Better than Kobe beef, for me, at least. I reckon that burger up top was divine.
