The Food Market in Osijek To Buy Local Slavonian Ingredients

In the city of Osijek, there is an excellent food market that sells lots of nice ingredients for cooking. As we were staying in the city for a few weeks, I cooked lots of things from the farmer’s markets.

Market Osijek

The Slavonia region of Croatia is known for its agricultural produce, and much of the country’s food is grown there. Thus, the local farmer’s market is brimming with quality food produce to buy.

Indoor market

My usual modus operandi when visiting was to see what’s available and then pop for a beer at a local bar to help decide what to cook.

Stalls At The Osijek Farmer’s Market

Type of stalls that I enjoyed seeing and purchasing goods from while in the city.

Fruit & Vegetables

You can purchase a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables at the outside stalls of the market. I purchased these daily depending on what I fancied cooking. One of my favourite items was the hot versions of sweet peppers, which added a nice kick to salads and other dishes.

The fresh berries and nuts were also delicious, which I often add to yoghurt for breakfast. I enjoyed the blueberries and blackberries with Brazil nuts.

Honey

There are also stalls selling honey and bee products. We purchased honey a few times during our visit and found it great. My wife loved to add it to tea and to overnight oats for breakfast.

Meat & Fish

Inside, they have butchers and fishmongers. The meat from the market is of great quality, and there are options for all cuts required. We enjoyed pork, beef brisket, and chicken on our visit, cooking a variety of dishes. The fishmonger supplied mostly river fish and squid from the Adriatic Sea.

Cheese & Cured Meats

Cured meats

The deli stalls were fantastic too, selling local cheeses and cured meats. A local speciality to look out for is kulen, a spicy pork sausage which is great for snacks or to add to cooking.

Slavonian Sausage

I tried a few stalls for Kulen and enjoyed the flavours. From my observation, some were spicier than others, and some were made with leaner meat. My favourite stalls were the smaller producers.

Pasta & Dumplings

There are also stalls selling dried and fresh pasta or dumplings. These were in the indoor section, and they had good options for shapes. I enjoyed cooking with these a few times, and they are ideal to get the right weight for your food.

Cooking From The Osijek Markets

I enjoyed cooking with produce from the farmers’ market, and the food all tasted great. I love being able to purchase fresh ingredients with no waste when travelling rather than prepacked large packets at supermarkets.

Where are the markets?

The markets are between the railway station and the city centre and easy to find, as they are quite big. The easiest way to find them is on Google Maps. Nearby are also some cool street art, cafes, and places to dine out.
