Tried & Tested Restaurants, Bars & Cafes in Sopron

I really enjoyed the cafe, bar, and restaurant options while visiting Sopron in Hungary for a mini break. There are many options for food and drinks out; however, there were far too many to try during our 3-day visit. Thus, I researched and visited those I knew I’d like and that had an excellent reputation. These were mostly restaurants that specialise in Hungarian cuisine. My two favourite restaurants were Gyógygödör Borozó and Deák Étterem.

In addition to dining out, I tried some of the nice cafes and bars in Sopron, which were great for a beer or coffee. I mostly drank Soproni, the beer that bears the city’s name and is brewed locally. As our visit was in winter, the seating was mostly indoors. However, in the warmer months, most have somewhere outside to sit.

Restaurants, Bars & Cafes in Sopron

These are the places where we enjoyed drinks or dining out while in the city.

Deák Étterem

One restaurant that stood out to me during my research was Deák Étterem just outside the old town. Deák Étterem is a lovely place where we enjoyed lunch. It is nicely decorated inside, and they also have a big courtyard outside for warmer days.

At lunchtime we had options: the main menu or their daily menu, which was rather cheap. For drinks here, I enjoyed some Soproni beer. Other options were coffee, wine, and soft drinks.

Deák Étterem

For food, we opted for their special platter for two people, which was massive and filling. Their platter included cordon bleu, fried cheese, cheese-crusted chicken breast, bacon-fried tenderloin, grilled vegetables, pepper sauce, and French fries.

Gyógygödör Borozó

A pleasant restaurant in the old town area is Gyógygödör Borozó, located in the cellar of an old building near the Goat Church. I visited here for a solo lunch out with beer. For beer, I enjoyed the local tipple, Soproni.

Goulash

Their menu was loaded with Hungarian dishes. As it was my first time in the country for a while, I chose goulash with dumplings. The food was delicious, and their venue was great.

Dömötöri Patisserie and Café

While heading towards the Lenck Villa, we spotted Dömötöri Patisserie and Café and thought we’d pop in. This is a special place and nicely decorated in a posh manner. It seemed a pretty formal place for me.

They specialise in coffee and cake, which my wife enjoyed, including the local cream cake. I enjoyed a nice cold beer here and enjoyed the décor, too.

Puskás Söröző és Étterem

Another place we enjoyed a meal out in the city was at Puskás Söröző és Étterem. Puskás Söröző és Étterem is on the main boulevard opposite Tesco and is rather nice. They have various seating options: out the front, inside, and in a nice courtyard. As it was warm, we dined in their courtyard.

They have a good drinks menu, including local beer, wines, and soft drinks. I enjoyed a few glasses of Sporoni on my visit, which hit the spot. For starters, we shared the cold cuts board, which had meats and cheeses, including spicy salami. For the main course, we enjoyed their ribs with roasted potatoes, which were very filling and tasted good. Overall, Puskás Söröző és Étterem served good, hearty food, and the service was very hospitable.

Papa Joe’s Saloon & Steakhouse

A unique place for food and drink in the city is Papa Joe’s Saloon & Steakhouse. What drew me inside were the bar stools that I spotted through the window. They are horse saddles, which look a bit fun.

Papa Joe's Saloon & Steakhouse

Papa Joe’s Saloon & Steakhouse serves a full range of drinks and has a nice food menu too. Highlights of the menu include a blend of Texan-themed dishes and some Hungarian flavours. I only popped in for a beer on the saddle, which was nice, and the staff here were not so friendly.

Patrick’s Pizzeria & Lounge

Our first meal in Sopron was fast food from the nearest open place to our accommodation, Patrick’s Pizzeria & Lounge. They have a nice place with indoor and outdoor seating. I enjoyed a beer while the food was cooking, which was nice. For food, we enjoyed a large kebab and fries. The food and drink hit the spot for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

  1. Try the Kiss Deák brasserie. It is a cellar bar, just off the main tourist area, easily walkable and not far from the Deák Restaurant. It’s a slightly quirky place, and not a chain-type experience. The owner is very friendly and professional. The customers are mostly local people, and a few “ex-pats”, but everyone is made very welcome by the staff and customers. Good food. Good beer. Good prices. Good people.
