Aquamarina Boat Hotel on the River Danube in Visegrad, Hungary

We had a thoroughly enjoyable time staying at Aquamarina, a boat hotel on the River Danube in Visegrad, Hungary. Aquamarina is a pleasant place to stay, and it was our first experience staying in a boat hotel.

Aquamarina is centrally located and has easy access to the town centre, the ferry crossing the river to Nagymaros, and the train station. We ended up staying here at short notice because of an awful experience across the river.

The hotel is within easy reach of many attractions in Visegrad, so it is a great place to stay. It is also within walking distance of some pleasant bars and restaurants. Our favourite was Schachtel Étterem.

The boat has an interesting history that dates back to its 1903 construction at the Somorskiy ship factory. It has served various functions before becoming a hotel, including as a casino cruise ship. You can learn a bit more about the boat when on board.

We had an unpleasant experience the night before and needed to move on at short notice, but we still needed to stay in the Visegrad-Nagymaros area. Thus, we searched Booking.com for dog-friendly places to stay, and up popped the Aquamarina Boat Hotel. Booking was straightforward, and you had to pay at the property, which was handy.

Checking In

As we arrived early at the hotel, we asked if the reception could hold our backpacks until we checked in. The reception was fine with this and very friendly, even minding Henry, our dog, while we used the bathroom. We had planned to walk up the hills to Visegrad Castle, and leaving our luggage helped us do so. Once we had finished at the castle, we returned to check in properly. This was standard procedure; I’d check in and then pay. It all ran smoothly, and we got the room keys.

Are They Dog Friendly?

We booked because the hotel is dog-friendly, and they were great with Henry. He was fine being left in the room. Some places don’t allow this, even for good boys like Henry. Pets can access the other parts of the hotel, including the breakfast room and games room. Aquamarina Boat Hotel gets a thumbs up from us for being a pleasant place to stay with dogs.

The Room

We booked the cheapest room available, as we try to budget for travel where possible. Our room was lovely with all the features you’d expect in a hotel. The bed was big and comfy, and I slept well here. They had a desk, a wardrobe, and bedside tables. Unlike some hotels, they had plugs next to the bed, which is my preference for charging devices as I sleep.

The bathroom had a good shower, and they provided toiletries for guests. Cleaning was offered daily, but we skipped it as we were only staying for two nights. Overall, I was impressed with the room, and it suited all our needs.

Breakfast

The price of a stay includes breakfast at the hotel. They serve this from 7 am until 10 am each day. This is a self-service buffet with plenty of food and drink options. They do hot drinks, including excellent strong coffee and some fruit juice options. I enjoyed their apple juice the most.

For food, they have cereals, pastries, cold meats, salad, cooked meats and eggs. I really liked their sausages, most of which had a paprika zing. There were a few unique options too, including aubergine spread, falafel and deep-fried zucchini.

Other Facilities We Enjoyed

On the boat, you can walk around or sit on the decks. We liked the bow end near the onboard restaurant. However, there are tables and chairs around the edges, all with superb views.

The boat also has a cool games room that is free for guests to use. This includes pool, table tennis, darts and table football. There are also seats and some board games, including chess.

The bar area was out of action on our visit. However, the seats are on a glass floor, where you can see the boat’s engine, which is pretty cool.

We were impressed with all aspects of our stay at the Aquamarina Boat Hotel in Visegrad. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed except for a kettle. The staff on board were helpful and friendly.

The boat was completely dog-friendly and welcoming to canine guests. Also, the breakfast had plenty of options, so I enjoyed it. As a bonus, the 11 am checkout meant no rushing to get away for onward travel. I would return. Find out more…
