Cluj-Napoca Christmas Market 2026 – Târgul de Crăciun
Each year, Cluj-Napoca’s main square hosts the Cluj Christmas Market (Târgul de Crăciun – Planeta Crăciun). The market runs from 20th November 2026 until New Year’s Day. There are quiet times during the day to have a mooch. However, the square becomes busy on weekend evenings.
Expect a big central tree, lights draped across Piața Unirii, a Ferris wheel, live music, and plenty of stalls selling street food, mulled wine, and handmade Transylvanian gifts.

Because the event is primarily outdoors, the Christmas fair is pretty dog-friendly, and many visitors bring pets. If it’s busy, it’s possibly best to stick to the fringes of the square or carry your dog if it gets very busy.

This is one of many Christmas markets I’ve visited in Romania, the most notable being the Brasov Christmas market.

The Christmas Market Backdrop – Unirii Square
Piata Unirii is beautiful year-round and surrounded by striking buildings, including many cafe-bars overlooking the square.

The square also features the iconic Matthias Corvinus Monument, which is splendid to see. The statue depicts the 15th-century Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus on horseback, with warriors at his side.
Decorations & Christmas Tree

The square is nicely decorated, with an enormous Christmas tree as the centrepiece and presents underneath. The entrances all have arches decorated with gold lights. A big, top-like frame of lights stands in front of the main arena. The entire site looks pretty and is especially bright when an act is on the main stage.
Ferris Wheel and Fairground Rides

The main ride at the fair is the Ferris wheel, which overlooks the entire site. It offers fantastic views and is lit up with bright lights. The other significant ride is the carousel, which is more of a children’s ride.
Main Stage and Live Music

The main stage in the square is pretty cool, with a fantastic lighting rig. A variety of performances will use the stage over the 6-week fair. This includes some iconic Romanian musicians, like Voltaj and Directia 5. These two were great on the opening weekend, and the square had a great vibe.
Market Stalls

There are a variety of stalls around the square selling all sorts of things. Many sell food to consume when at the festivities. This includes fast food, cakes and Kurtos. You can also purchase a variety of gifts, including some handmade items from Transylvania.

Many food producers also use the market to sell their wares. The charcuterie and cheese stalls are particularly interesting and sometimes have free samples. On my visit, I enjoyed samples of some local hard cheeses.

Some street food stalls are excellent for a savoury palate: the langos and bratwurst stalls are wonderful. For those who like the sweeter things in life, head to the kurtos and various cake stalls.

At the festive market, stalls also sell traditional Transylvanian clothing. These also sell warm clothing, which is ideal for keeping warm during the cold Romanian winter.
Santa’s Grotto

They also have a Santa’s grotto at the market, which you can visit inside. It’s nicely decorated and is quite popular. Just outside the door, a postbox lets children and adults send their letters before the big day.
2026 Christmas Market Dates & Location

The 2026 Christmas Market runs from 20th November to 1st January 2027. All the attractions and events take place in Unirii Square in the heart of Cluj-Napoca.
Other Christmas Events in Cluj-Napoca
Beyond the main Christmas markets, Cluj-Napoca has other cool things to see.
Iulius Mall

Shopping malls are fun during the festive period, and Iulius Mall, Cluj’s main shopping centre, is no different. The mall was nicely decorated and featured an enormous tree.

Near the main entrance by the lake, they also had a mini festive market, which is a great place for festive drinks and street food.
Market At The Orthodox Cathedral

Near the entrance to the Orthodox cathedral, we visited a small Christmas market. It was also nicely decorated and had some interesting stalls. These sell a range of festive products, including gifts, seasonal food, and drinks. The statues, fountains and church were also nicely lit up during the festive season and are well worth seeing after dark.
Piața Mihai Viteazu

Another good area for a walk around to see the lights is Piața Mihai Viteazu. Piața Mihai Viteazu is a cool place to hang out and is nicely decorated. It’s also good to see the Michael the Brave statue all lit up at night.
Getting to Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca is on a major railway line in Romania, so it is easy to reach by train from the major cities. You can also catch a night train from further afield, including from Bucharest, Budapest, and Vienna. The city also has an international airport with direct flights from all around Europe. I have flown from the UK to Cluj-Napoca a few times.
