Visit Sighișoara Citadel, Romania: Travel Guide & Tips

Sighișoara Citadel is one of my favourite historic places to visit in Romania. The UNESCO-listed medieval town is colourful, compact and atmospheric, with cobbled streets, towers, churches, restaurants and views over the surrounding area. We’ve stayed several times and keep finding reasons to return.

Sighișoara Travel Guide

Here are some practical tips I found useful when planning and enjoying a stay in Sighișoara. I have created a guide for things to do in Sighișoara to help you make the most of your visit.

Why Is It Worth Visiting?

Why Visit Sighisoara

The citadel is well worth visiting for its combination of historic sites and beautiful buildings. Wandering around the fortifications is pretty special, as is learning the stories of those who once lived here. The colourful houses throughout the site are another highlight.

How to Get to Sighișoara

The city has bus or train services directly to many of the larger towns and cities in Transylvania and Romania. Many of these have connections to international stations, including Vienna and Budapest. For this reason, it is a popular stop for Interrail Pass users.

Dog Sighisoara train station

Sighișoara has a small railway station with a cafe serving coffee and beer. Note that the cafe only accepts cash, so be prepared. The railway station, like many in Romania, had a steam train on display for decoration.

On arrival, there were plenty of taxis to take us to the historic centre. However, this is also walkable. Being so close to the railway network and its historical significance, it is a good option for a train holiday destination.

Where to Eat and Drink

Hotel Sighișoara Tripe Soup

Trying local Transylvanian food and drinks is a worthwhile part of visiting Sighișoara. Soups were a highlight for me, especially the hearty and sour styles. Mici is a delicious snack available in most restaurants, served with local mustard.

I found many places to eat out, including hotels, cafes, bars, and restaurants. Many of these were dog-friendly inside; however, most had outside seating.

Where to Stay in the Citadel?

Cobbled Streets

There are loads of accommodation options in Sighișoara. This includes self-catering rooms, hotels and Airbnb options. It also has a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel just outside the citadel walls. This hotel offers magnificent river views for those who like this chain.

Archway Sighisoara

On our first visit, our apartment was in a central location, part of a complex just off the main street. It had a big comfy bed and a functional bathroom, and all for less than £20. There are many options for hotels and other places to stay on Booking.com.

Casa Barocă a Dog Friendly Pension

For another visit during late autumn, we opted to stay in Casa Barocă. Casa Barocă is a dog-friendly pension within the citadel, so the location is very convenient. The accommodation was comfortable, with useful facilities and décor that suited the medieval setting.

Checking in was painless. We collected the keys from the medieval restaurant opposite, and the host was attentive. There were enough beds for three guests in the main room.

Casa Wagner Dog Friendly Hotel in Sighisoara

On a longer stay in Sighișoara, we stayed in the dog-friendly Hotel Casa Wagner, a lovely hotel in the main square of the citadel. The room was in a courtyard and had nice beds and a big bathroom. Overall, our stay at Hotel Casa Wagner was great, and we felt very comfortable.

Best Time to Visit

Town Square Sighisoara

As the town is a popular place to visit and has its UNESCO status, it can get busy. The weekend and summer are the busiest times. We have enjoyed visiting out of peak season in spring and autumn and have found it pretty quiet. One thing I would recommend is staying overnight to enjoy the old town’s nighttime vibe.

  1. I passed through Sighisoara in 2010… arriving at 5 am or so, by train from Bratislava via Budapest. Felt a little Wild West like back then. Loved it all the same…
