Restaurant Šestica

Restaurant Šestica Dining Room

Restaurant Šestica is a traditional Slovenian restaurant that we visited for a birthday meal for my wife and enjoyed greatly. They have a dining area both inside and outside, which is lovely. For drinks, we opted for Union, a Slovenian beer, and a bottle of local wine.

Restaurant Šestica Lamb & Idrija zlikrofi

For starters, we enjoyed the Slovenian mushroom soup, which was served in a bread bowl. We had heard lots of great things about the local mushroom soups, so it was a no-brainer. For the main course, my wife enjoyed the salmon, which was a very generous portion. I opted to enjoy their leg of lamb with Idrija zlikrofi. Idrija zlikrofi is a traditional Slovenian dumpling dish that originates from Idrija. They make Idrija zlikrofi from dough with a potato filling, and they are rather nice.

Restaurant Šestica Strudel

For dessert, we opted for their apple strudel, which was nicely cooked, with flaky pastry and ice cream.

Das ist Valter

Das ist Valter

Another place we enjoyed a meal out was Das Ist Valter, which is near the Metelkova District. Das Ist Valter is a Bosnian restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. On our visit, we enjoyed sitting outside. They have some nice beer and a menu of typical Balkan food. I enjoyed their Bosnian mixed grill, which they served with onions and flatbread. This was a cheap and filling meal out that we really enjoyed.

Premier Pub With Excellent Beer & Views

Premier Pub

On the banks of the river is the delightful Premier Pub. They have some fantastic seats with superb views and provide at-the-table service. Premier Pub is also dog-friendly and provided Henry with water when we visited. They are also one of the cheaper bars in the riverside area and serve Union, a refreshing Slovenian beer.

Kavarna Pločnik in Prešeren Square

Kavarna Pločnik - Dog Friendly

Overlooking the beautiful Prešeren Square is Kavarna Pločnik, a pleasant bar with outside seating. The Kavarna Pločnik outside seating has magnificent views and is comfortable. They serve a wonderful selection of drinks, including coffee, wine and Slovenian beer.

We found them to be dog-friendly, brought Henry a bowl of water without prompting, and gave him some much-loved fuss.

Fany & Mary: For Food And Drink Near The Main Sights

Fany & Mary Night Out

Fany & Mary is a bar-restaurant near the river Ljubljanica with an on-trend menu, including salads, wings and burgers. They have a nice outdoor seating area, which is lovely on a summer’s evening. We enjoyed a few Lasko Slovenian beers and a main course each.

Fany & Mary Wings - Food Menu

I was fancying wings, so I enjoyed them with wedges and tasty barbecue sauce. My wife opted for the Caesar salad, which was delicious too. They are dog-friendly in their outside seating area, which is a bonus too.

They have a splendid choice of seats, including tables on the terrace and deckchairs in their garden. Kavarna SEM lounge bar welcomed Henry and even brought him some dog water. The bar was a lovely place to sit in their garden and enjoy a beer.

The Dumpling House – MOJI ŠTRUKLJI Slovenije

Grand Cafe

Overlooking the city’s market under Plečnik’s Arcades is The Dumpling House – MOJI ŠTRUKLJI Slovenije, a lovely place for a drink in the daytime. They have a fantastic range of juices that are very useful for recovery after a heavy night. They also serve a range of traditional Slovenian dumplings. This includes both savoury and sweet options, including fruit dumplings.

Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant

Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant

When travelling full-time, some non-local food is a pleasant treat. Thus, I found Taj Mahal, an Indian restaurant near our hostel. Their food was delicious, with great flavours, especially my lamb madras. The service at the Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant was great, and I enjoyed eating in their outside seating area. Henry didn’t come to this visit with us; he is unsure how pet-friendly they are.

Levstik Pub: A Cheap Place For Local Beer

Levstik Pub

If you like no-nonsense bars that serve cheap beer, then head to Levstik Pub. You can find it very close to the Herkulov vodnjak fountain. Levstik Pub is a pleasant dog-friendly place that has outdoor seating. Their beers were some of the cheapest we enjoyed while visiting the city.

Ježek Bar: A Nice Place For a Drink Towards The Train Station

Ježek Bar

Another pet-friendly place we visited with Henry was Ježek Bar. Ježek Bar is between the city centre and the railway station, and I found it to be a good staging post before leaving. They served Lasko, a nice Slovenian beer, and even got Henry some dog water. Ježek Bar has lovely decor inside and a covered outside seating area. They were quite cheap compared to bars in the tourist areas.

Holidays’ Pub

Holidays' Pub

Another place we visited for drinks was Holidays’ Pub. Holidays’ Pub is on the main high street in the city. They had a few canine guests when we visited. For drinks here, I enjoyed Lasko, a Slovenian beer.

TirBar bar At The Train Station

TirBar bar

If awaiting a train at Ljubljana Railway Station, then TirBar is a great option. It’s a basic train station bar with views of the platform. They serve nice coffee and Slovenian beers at good prices. We enjoyed a few Union beers here and had a light bite from the nearby bakery with the drinks. The staff were friendly and even brought us some dog water for Henry. TirBar is certainly not a cool bar, but it has an excellent location and prices.

Harat’s Pub

Harat's pub

A cool bar near the Dragon Bridge is Harat’s Pub. Harat’s Pub has outside seating and a nicely decorated interior. Service here is at the bar, and it can get busy. We visited Harat’s Pub because it was the meeting point for the Ljubljana pub crawl. The pub was nice, but the pub crawl was a bit of a letdown.

Harat's pub

They have lots of drink options, including many international beers, such as Guinness. I enjoyed a Blanche de Namur, which is a fantastic Belgian beer. Harat’s pub also serves food, including steak, burgers and bar snacks for sharing.

Šeherezada Food

Sometimes you want something quick and easy to eat, and Šeherezada Food met the bill. Šeherezada Food is a fast-food place in the centre. We enjoyed a kebab and chips here after a night out. The food was good, and they had an outdoor seating area.
