Bars and Restaurants in Vienna Including Viennese Food I Enjoyed

On our visits to Vienna, we enjoyed eating out or having drinks at some of the many bars and restaurants in the city. Vienna has a vast choice of options to suit many budgets, including those that specialise in Viennese cuisine.

Restaurants in Vienna

During our visits, we really enjoyed visiting restaurants that serve the local Viennese cuisine and also tried some not-so-local options. For drinks, there is a brilliant choice, including neighbourhood bars, cafes, cocktail bars and many options for beer gardens.

Beer in Vienna

I really enjoy Viennese cuisine, including the Wiener Schnitzel, pork knuckles and various other meat dishes. The city is also famous for desserts, including nice cakes and apple strudels.

Tried & Tested Restaurants & Bars in Vienna

These are the restaurants and bars we tried during our visits to Vienna. Some were great for traditional Viennese food, while others were useful for beer and a break from sightseeing.

Schweizerhaus

Schweizerhaus

At the Prater Amusement Park is Schweizerhaus, a fantastic place for food or drinks. We enjoyed a great meal out, including a massive pork knuckle with bretzels. This was enough for a few of us to share.

Their menu also includes other Viennese classics, including Wiener Schnitzel. They have a massive outside seating area, and the servers sure know how to keep the food and drink rolling. Their beer selection is great, with many local options and some world-famous beers like Budweiser Budvar.

Wiener Grill Haus

Wiener Grill Haus Beer

Near the Schönbrunn Palace, a popular attraction, is Wiener Grill Haus, a nice place for food and beer. They have a lovely outside seating area and inside dining, both with table service.

Viennese Food

Their menu features many local favourites, and, as a treat, I enjoyed a charcuterie board, followed by a pork knuckle with all the trimmings. Their beer was also good, and I found it to be a pretty chilled place with good, hearty food.

Brauhof Wien

Near the Westbahnhof station is Brauhof Wien, a fantastic place for food and drink. They have a lovely dining room with big and small tables, and I found it to be modern and comfortable.

Brauhof Wien Beer

I enjoyed a few meals here on my recent visit, and the food and beer were so good. Their drinks menu is diverse, with some in-house brewed options and other Austrian favourites. I enjoyed some fantastic Weissbier, which was very moreish.

Brauhof Wien Wiener Schnitzel

Their food menu had lots of popular Viennese dishes, including the Wiener Schnitzel. This was served with potato salad and was delicious.

I also enjoyed their house ribs, which were a massive dish and could have fed two people. They served this with potatoes, horseradish and some nice sauces. We also shared kaiserschmarrn, a fantastic dessert, on our visit. Brauhof Wien was fantastic, and I’d love to return when their outside seating is open.

Mariahilferbräu

Stiegl Weisse

Another fantastic place for food near Westbahnhof station is Mariahilferbräu. They are in a pretty pink building with a nice bar area and some outside seating on the street. We enjoyed a meal outside. They have a great beer menu, and I opted for the Stiegl Weisse, mostly influenced by the regalia on the outside of the venue.

Mariahilferbräu Schnitzel

Their food menu has many tasty options, including local favourites. We both enjoyed their Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad and cranberry sauce. The food and vibe here were great, and I certainly would return.

Hopferl Wien

Hopferl Wien

Another nice Austrian restaurant in the city centre is Hopferl Wien, a short walk from AM Hof. They have options for inside and outside dining. I sat in the courtyard and really enjoyed it. They have a diverse beer and food menu, including many Austrian dishes. For beer, I enjoyed their Ottakringer Helles, a nice, refreshing drink and perfect for a break from sightseeing.

Zattl Wirtshaus

Zattl Wirtshaus & Biergarten Inside

A nice place that I enjoyed drinking out was Zattl Wirtshaus. Zattl Wirtshaus has both inside and alfresco dining options. We enjoyed sitting outside here. They have an excellent beer and food menu featuring many popular Viennese dishes. I found the service here great and enjoyed my visit.

Café Restaurant Maximilian

Near the Votive Church is Café Restaurant Maximilian, a nice place for a drink. They have a nice covered outside seating area and a pleasant inside area. They provide at-the-table service in both, and I found the servers friendly. For drinks, I enjoyed some Ottakringer beer for a welcome break while exploring the Ringstraße. They also serve an extensive range of coffee, cakes and an interesting lunch menu.

Mel’s Diner

Another place I enjoyed lunch was at Mel’s Diner near Judenplatz. They specialise in craft beer and home-style food. I enjoyed sitting in their covered outside seating area, which had some pleasant shade. I enjoyed a special-offer lunch of beer and a pulled pork sandwich with fries, and both were nice. Their food menu also includes burgers, wings, gourmet hot dogs, and desserts.

  1. Thanks for interesting report (as always).
Only remark. In Schweitzerhaus in Vienna already for 99 years they have Budvar beer. It’s Czech beer – similar to Pilsner Urquell, but less bitter.
Pilsner Urquell was on tap exactly 100 years back, but it was to bitter for taste of guests so they switched to Budvar.
Budvar is from České Budějovice and Pilsner Urquell is from Plzeň. Both in the Czech Republic.
