Seven Ladders Canyon Brasov – Hike, Zip Line & Picnic Area

During the summer, I enjoyed a blue-sky day out for a walk at Seven Ladders Canyon in Brasov County, Romania. This is a popular walking spot for individuals and groups and is very picturesque and easily accessible.

The Seven Ladders Canyon, or Canionul Șapte Scări, is a mountainous canyon carved by the Șapte Scări Brook. It is located south of Dâmbul Morii village in Brasov County, in Romania. It is one of the major tourist attractions in the Piatra Mare Massif. The Piatra Mare Mountains are at the southern end of the grand arc of the Eastern Carpathians. They are near the neighbouring Postăvarul Massif, a fantastic peak to ascend.

Seven Ladders Canyon Climb

Mother Nature carved the canyon from Jurassic limestone, and it has seven waterfalls. The biggest of the seven waterfalls is 35 metres in height. There is a metal walkway with ladders through the 7 waterfalls, enabling walkers to experience them all if you opt to get a ticket to pass through the canyon area.

Picnic Area

To get to the canyon, there is a walk uphill/mountain on clearly marked and well-trodden paths. These pass through some beautiful woodland and mountain scenery. Many visitors enjoy eating alfresco with a pleasant picnic or a drink in the wild.

I found the walk to the canyon very enjoyable, with some challenging parts. On the way up, you followed the course of the mountain stream.

There are various trails off the main route that visitors use. These were rather pretty to explore when heading to or returning from the canyon.

Zip Line

The Walk in the forest

The route is also home to some zip wires for the adventurous to come down the quick way. It disappointed me that the weight limit for these was quite low and there was zero chance of enjoying these, but people seemed to enjoy them.

Climbing Through the Gorge

Little Waterfall

At the paid area, there was quite the queue to climb the first ladder and enter the canyon. The 7 waterfalls had walkways made of metal to navigate you through the gorge.

Mountain walkway

This included climbing some high metal ladders on the way and was a good workout while enjoying the water features. I recommend boots or trail shoes with firm soles for these.

The canyon is rather dim inside; however, as you ascend through the site, the light at the top gets brighter.

Navigating the principal attraction took about an hour until you arrived at the top, ready to walk down some slopes back to the picnic area.

Visitors have a few options to get to Seven Ladders Canyon. The easiest is to drive or book a taxi. This is just over 6 miles from Brașov. Alternatively, you can catch the 17b bus from near the railway station to Timișu de Jos, which takes 25 minutes. There is a bus about every hour to Timișu de Jos, and it is a cheap option.

Is It Worth Visiting?

I thoroughly enjoyed the walk in the area but secretly wished I had visited at a quieter time. It was quite busy at the weekend. Note to self: check Google Maps to visit at a less popular time, maybe in early spring or not during the school holidays or weekends. Overall, Seven Ladders Canyon is a great place for an easier walk in the mountains for inexperienced walkers.
