New Year’s Eve in Brasov, Romania, for Epic Fireworks & Fun
Brasov in Romania comes alive for the New Year’s Eve celebrations, and it gets very busy. Council Square in Old Town was the focus of the fun, with a stage with live music and a DJ blaring out and crowds gathering. It very much seemed a family affair, with entire families marking the occasion.
I’ve enjoyed three New Year celebrations in Brasov, each different but enjoyable.
Note: the 2026 fireworks display has been replaced with a laser show.
Eating Out On New Year’s Eve in Brasov
Restaurants in Brasov often become fully booked for the New Year celebrations, as I unfortunately discovered on my first attempt. Most places did tickets for the whole evening with elaborate menus and entertainment for customers.
However, there are still a few bars people can turn up at for food and a drink. These include stalls in the main square and a few takeaways. We usually eat out early or cook at our place nowadays.
New Year’s Eve Fireworks in Council Square

They mark midnight on New Year’s Eve with a fantastic firework display above the square. This is rather special and lasted a good 10-15 minutes. Individuals were also setting off firecrackers and fireworks throughout the day and late into the night.

This is an occasion for us to leave the dog back at home or the hotel, as there were lots of fireworks and sizeable crowds.

On the stroke of midnight, as the fireworks were lighting up the sky, people opened a drink to mark the occasion. People either carried their own bubbly, a hip flask or beer and drank in the square. The Christmas Market stalls were still selling warm alcoholic drinks, which proved very nice on this cold New Year’s evening.
Where Else To Watch The Fireworks

There are various places to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks away from the popular spot in Piața Sfatului. Piața Sfatului can get busy, and the music is very loud. On our second New Year, we popped to Piața Sfatului to see what’s going on and enjoy the music.

For the 2024 celebrations, we came prepared with a day bag with drinks and headed to Tampa Promenade near the Sub Tampa restaurant. It was quite a vibe here with people with their own fireworks. There was also plenty of space, so it was not so crowded. You get a wonderful view of the fireworks display from here without the neck-bending needed in the main town square.

Another popular option is to climb to the Brasov sign on Mount Tampa and see the pyrotechnics from above. It was quite impressive to see the row of torches heading to the top of the mountain in the run-up to midnight. We have earmarked this for a future New Year’s Eve.

The suburbs are also pretty special, as many people have their own fireworks displays. The sum of these is pretty epic to watch. There are various places to buy your own fireworks too.
Is Brasov Worth Visiting For New Year’s Eve?
Overall, New Year’s Eve in Brasov was a fantastic night out; no problems, and people were merry but not drunk. I felt safe throughout the evening, well, except for a few moments with firecrackers getting a bit close.
It’s as good a place as any to visit, and as a bonus, there are lots of other things to do in Brasov if you visit for a festive holiday. If on a ski holiday nearby, the fireworks and celebrations are well worth a trip down from the Poiana Brasov Ski Resort.
