Is Sopron in Hungary Worth Visiting? My Travel Guide

Sopron in Hungary is a pretty city near the border of Austria and has lots of interesting features. We stayed for three days and found it a fascinating and relaxing place to visit. During our visit, we dined out and enjoyed the key sites and the chilled coffee scene.

Sopron Hungary

Sopron has many layers of history, which you can see when exploring the city. This includes the Roman era and the medieval period. To complement its sites, there were good options for food or drink out. Our trip was enhanced by finding some quality dog-friendly accommodation near the main square.

Some helpful information to help you decide whether it’s worth visiting Sopron.

Places of Interest

Fo Ter Sopron

The main attractions in Sopron are in the old town area, which is rather eye-pleasing. I really enjoyed mooching around and seeing the historic buildings, including during dog walks with Henry.

Tower

One of the most popular landmarks to visit is the Fire Tower, or Tuztorony. It has an interesting history and is beautiful to see from various points of the city. If you choose to climb to the top, the views of the area are special.

Beautiful architecture

Sopron also has museums covering a range of topics. We enjoyed a few of these, including the main city museum. Highlights of this were the baroque home and the Roman lapidarium. Another favourite for me was the Lenck Villa, which was very engaging. You can also book various tours of the town on the Viator website.

Food & Drink Out

I really enjoyed the cafes, bars and restaurants while visiting the city. There were fantastic choices and far too many to try on our 3-day visit. Thus, I researched and chose the ones I’d like, including some that serve Hungarian cuisine. My two favourites for food were Gyógygödör Borozó and Deák Étterem. There were loads of cafes and bars for drinks throughout, ranging from more formal to trendy options.

What’s Nearby?

Sopron is well connected, and it is possible to take day trips to nearby towns and cities. This includes Gyor, Szombathely or, at a stretch, the Hungarian capital. Esterházy Castle, the Hungarian Versailles, is a short bus trip away and well worth visiting. Lake Neusiedl is also local, which is in both Hungary and Austria. This is a popular area for hiking and watersports.

Where to Stay?

While researching our visit, we found quite a few dog-friendly places to stay. This included some hotels and holiday homes. We fancied staying near the centre and having a kitchen, so we opted for Nuovo Casa. Nuovo Casa impressed us and had all the facilities needed for slow travelling with some comfort mixed in. Checking in was straightforward, and the accommodation enhanced our visit.

Travel To Sopron

On our visit, we used trains to get to and from Sopron as part of a longer trip. We arrived from Budapest after a long night train from Romania. This was a direct journey from the capital and a pleasant ride. For onward travel, we took the train to Zagreb via a few other Hungarian towns. It is also well connected to cities in Austria, including Vienna and Graz.

Food Shopping on a Self-Catering Trip

In the centre, there are independent shops and supermarkets to purchase ingredients and drinks for a self-catering stay. Our most frequently used was Tesco, which had most things we needed. Another cool place was the market, a short walk from the city centre.

Is the City Dog Friendly?

Is Sopron Dog Friendly

We found it to be a top city to visit with Henry, our dog. He was welcomed into cafes and eateries. Those he couldn’t visit had clear signs. Finding accommodation on Booking.com and Airbnb returned results at various price points. Finally, the old town centre was suitable for dog walks, and locals were out and about with their dogs, too.

Summary: Is Sopron Worth Visiting?

Is Sopron Worth Visiting

We really enjoyed visiting Sopron, one of the smaller cities we’ve visited in Hungary. It had fascinating places of interest that were beautiful for a mooch around. There were also places to enjoy refreshments while visiting too. For a longer stay, it would have been an ideal base camp for exploring the local area.
