Photos of Places To Watch Sunset & Sunrise in Venice

Sunset and sunrise are special times of day in Venice, and they can really enhance the views. Not that they need enhancing. Sunset or sunrise walks are my favourite times of day in Venice, especially in the summer, when walking the dog to avoid the heat.

Venice Sunset

We enjoyed various walks in Venice at these times, and my preference was the early-morning sunrise walks, as they were quieter than the rest of the day. There are still people about, but not the crowds of later in the day. The only downside is there are not many cafes, bars, or shops open for sunrise during the summer. However, I found the occasional place for an early beer.

These are places I enjoyed seeing the sunrise in Venice, my favourite time of day in the city. There were many other places I’d love to catch the early sun, but our five-night stay was a limitation. My biggest regret was not getting to St Mark’s Square for the spectacle. If you like company, an early morning guided tour might be a good option.

From Ponte dell’Accademia

Ponte dell'Accademia Views Sunrise

Ponte dell’Accademia is one of the 4 bridges that cross the Grand Canal and has amazing views. The views to the east from here were especially special at sunrise. This included the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute and various palaces and boats moving. This seemed a bit more popular than the other places I visited early on.

Also, at the base of the bridge, there are some nice parts of the bank to watch. It’s pretty much the same view, including Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti, but without the height.

Calle del Traghetto S. Gregorio

The Grand Canal at sunrise

One of my favourite photos of the sun rising over the Grand Canal was taken at Calle del Traghetto S. Gregorio. This was a narrow side street that leads to a jetty used for ferries across the water. The views along the water towards St. Mark’s Basilica were splendid.

The Lagoon From Dorsoduro

The views across the lagoon from Dorsoduro towards Giudecca Island were very special. Giudecca Island has some fantastic churches which add to the scene. The path along here was very quiet, had places to sit and lots to see across the water.

Riva del Vin Near Rialto Bridge

Grand Canal Gondolas Sunrise

Riva del Vin, near the iconic Rialto Bridge, is a pretty spectacular place at any time of the day. During the summer sunrise, it is doubly special, as it is quiet too, with very few people out and about. The palaces on the opposite bank, along with the Rialto Bridge, make for beautiful red skies. My only regret is not hanging around here and taking more photos. But it was my last morning, and I forgot to bring a drink.

Punta della Dogana

The path alongside the Grand Canal at Punta della Dogana was a top spot to watch the early sun. A few other people also had the same idea during my visit.

Gondolas Sunrise

The views from here are splendid, including sights such as the tower in St Mark’s Square and the buildings on the banks.

The lamp at the end of the walkway was a great spot, offering nearby panoramic views of the lagoon and the other bank of the canal. As a bonus, the Punta della Dogana building catches the glow of the sunlight too.

Sunset Places & Photos

Gondola Sunset Dog Walk

We enjoyed many sunset walks in Venice, especially near our accommodation. Henry seemed fascinated with the gondolas passing by when no other dogs were about. You can also book various tours to see the red sky at night on the GetYourGuide website.

Dorsoduro Canals

The small canals in the Dorsoduro area of the city were my go-to spots for dog walks at sunset, and I really enjoyed them. The area was pretty quiet in places, and the views of the red skies were beautiful.

Campo Santa Margherita

Campo Santa Margherita Sunset

Campo Santa Margherita is a large town square with many bars and restaurants. This is a great place to explore at sunset, paired with a drink. The square has some pleasant sights, and there are benches to sit on. I enjoyed a few takeout beers here in the evenings to enjoy the spectacle.

Campo S. Barnaba

Another square I enjoyed the late sun was Campo S. Barnaba. Campo S. Barnaba has some nice bars, including my favourite, Bar Canton. Campo S. Barnaba has some cute bridges for enjoying the views and is also home to the St. Barnaba Church, which is now an art gallery.

What Time is Best?

Sunset and sunrise times in Venice vary depending on the time of the year that you visit. However, a quick Google search or a check of your phone’s weather app will let you know the estimated time. From experience, I find you arrive 45 minutes before the specified time to enjoy the sky changing colour.

And don’t forget to stay around for the 45 minutes afterward, so you enjoy the beautiful skies. Be aware that the architecture of Venice blocks many views; however, you can still get beautiful views of the skies down the canals and out to sea.
