Photos From Sunrise & Sunset Walks in Vienna, Austria
I really enjoy my sunrise walks in any city, and Vienna, the capital of Austria, delivered for both sunrises and sunsets. For sunrise walks, I plan them for specific areas; however, sunrises are more spontaneous and just happen if I’m there.

The early morning walks are by far my favourite, and I found some excellent spots near the Schönbrunn and Hofburg palaces. They were eerily quiet in the run-up to sunrise and made for fantastic times to see these splendid places. As a bonus, I found the occasional cafe open early for a post-golden-hour beer.
Places To See Sunrise in Vienna
Sunrise is my favourite time of the day to explore cities, and Vienna is no different. I enjoyed seeing many of the city’s key sites before the sun came out in its epic red light.
Schönbrunn Palace Gardens

The gardens of Schönbrunn Palace open early, making them perfect for an early-morning stroll. Be aware that entering through the main entrance by the palace is best, as these gates open first.

For sunrise, the Great Parterre behind the main building is a great spot to see the palace against the colourful skies.

The main palace building is also great to get up close and personal with during this time of the day, as nobody is about and you can enjoy the details.

The Neptune fountain is also a perfect spot, as its features and the red skies make a striking combination. If you take the path behind the fountain while you’re here, you’ll find some special features.

The hill above the Neptune fountain and below the Gloriette is a lovely walk as the sun comes up, with great views towards central Vienna and the palace. You can also make out the epic St. Stephen’s Cathedral on the skyline.

The Gloriette is the highest point, with views over Schönbrunn Palace, and the views here are epic. It has to be my favourite spot in Vienna to watch the sunrise. The Gloriette’s details, including arches and statues, add to the experience too.

When you leave after an early walk, I recommend the gate near Hietzing underground station, as places open early for an early-morning drink, including Café Dommayer. The sunrise views from the station towards Otto Wagner Court Pavilion are also special.
Burggarten

Next to the Hofburg Palace is Burggarten, a nice place to catch the early skies. You can see the Palmenhaus and Augustinerkirche from here.

The Mozart memorial is especially striking at this time of day; the flowerbeds, statue, and backdrop combine perfectly with the red skies.

Another cool vantage point was on the steps of the Neue Burg Wing overlooking the gardens.
Albertina Balcony

I was happy to find the Albertina Balcony, near the museum entrance, for the views. The equine statue near the entrance was especially striking against the red backdrop.

The views of the buildings below were special; these included the Sacher Hotel, the Vienna State Opera, and other nice buildings in Albertinaplatz.
Sunset Spots Vienna
Some photos of various sunsets I’ve enjoyed while in the city.
Prater

One of my favourite spots to watch the sunset in Austria’s capital is Prater Amusement Park. The Ferris wheels are both excellent places to enjoy a ride and see the colourful skies. I imagine other high rides have similarly special views; however, it’s all about timing and queues here.
Schönbrunn Palace Gardens in Vienna

Schönbrunn Palace Gardens in Vienna is a lovely place to watch the late sun. The grounds and palace are rather picturesque, and the light certainly enhances the site’s features. This is one of many nice parks and gardens in Vienna, some of which are wonderful for enjoying the red skies at sunset.
What Time is Best?
Sunset and sunrise times in Vienna vary depending on the day that you visit. However, a quick search on Google or Bing will let you know the estimated time. I find it best if you arrive 45 minutes before the specified time to enjoy the sky as it changes colour.
Also, stay around for the 45 minutes afterwards to enjoy the beautiful skies. Be aware that the architecture of Vienna city centre blocks many views; however, you can still get beautiful sky views down the side streets.
