Is Brno in the Czech Republic Worth Visiting on a Budget?

Brno is the second biggest city in the Czech Republic. We stayed in Brno for 6 nights, doing somewhat budget travelling. Brno has many attractions to visit and sights to see; however, we picked and chose which to visit to save some korunas and stick to the budget.

Budget Travel Brno Czech Republic

We visited with a dog, so we spent time doing dog-friendly things, including bars for Czech beer and parks for walking. When attractions weren’t suitable for Henry, we left him at our dog-friendly hostel for a nap.

Why Is Brno Worth Visiting?

Brno Czech Republic

We visited all the tourist attractions in Brno that piqued my interest. The castle on the hill and the cathedral were fantastic to visit inside. I also enjoyed seeing inside some of the city’s churches, the town hall and the famous ossuary.

Brno

In the city centre, the architecture is stunning, and I found many interesting buildings to explore. Brno also has some unique statues and monuments. We also enjoyed visiting the 10-Z bunker for a unique experience. Seeing the sights kept me busy for a few days.

Old Czech Platter

Beer and food were also great in the city and didn’t cost a fortune, so we got to spend time in some nice places between sightseeing.

Practical Tips For Visiting Brno

Some helpful information that I learnt from experience while spending a week in the city.

Where to Stay?

We prefer the central locations when staying in a city with the dog. It saves lots of travel time if leaving Henry for a nap or wanting to go and see something.

Hostel Brno

Out of all the budget dog-friendly places to stay, we opted for Hostel Eleven, near the castle and the cathedral. We rented a private room for our stay, which is nice. The hostel also has a shared bathroom and a microwave, fridge and kettle.

Backpacking Picnic

The limited kitchen meant hostel picnics rather than cooking for most meals. We got most of the supplies for these from local bakeries, the market, and supermarkets throughout the city.

Where To Dine Out?

Dark Beer Spare Ribs

Dining out in Brno and the Czech Republic is quite good value compared to other European countries we’ve visited. Thus, there was room in our budget for a few meals out during our stay in the city.

Pork Knee Brno

Most of these we chose specialised in traditional Czech cuisine, and we enjoyed some local specialities. As a bonus, there are quite a few options for dog-friendly restaurants. My favourite meal out in Brno was at Stopkova Plzeňská Pivnice. We enjoyed a pork knee and an old Bohemian plate.

Chilled Bars For a Beer

Cheap Beer Brno

I found plenty of bars to visit while in the city, and the beer prices are reasonable. Most places offer table service and local beers. One I particularly enjoyed was Starobrno beer at Putyka U Mika, a place with a covered outside seating area.

Backpacking Brno

You can also enjoy beers or other drinks from local shops in the city’s parks, which saves you money.

Getting Supplies

As we were travelling on a budget, a backpacker picnic was the default meal at our hostel. We had no cooker, so we purchased nothing that required cooking. The city centre has various supermarkets where you can purchase food and drink.

Supermarkets

After a bit of trial and error, my favourite place turned out to be Billa. They have a hot food counter that sells delights like rotisserie chicken, schnitzels and cooked pork. Their bakery had some great options, too. DM in the centre also stocked dog food for Henry, which was nice.

Laundry

Laundry

Our visit to Brno coincided with the need to refresh the clothes in our backpacks, so I enjoyed a trip to a laundrette. Out of the options, I chose to visit Speed Queen just outside the centre for a laundry run. This was easy to use and had pretty standard prices compared to other destinations that we’ve visited.

Getting About Using Local Trams

Public Transport

Brno has a wonderful tram network for getting around the city, which is easy to use. Navigating the trams using Google Maps is reliable and straightforward. As a bonus, you can pay on board by tapping your payment card on the yellow terminal.

Is Brno Worth Visiting?

Cathedral

We really enjoyed spending time in Brno despite being on a tighter budget than I would like. The city is magnificent, with so many historic and beautiful sights to see. There were plenty of parks for walks, and I didn’t get bored.

Castle

During our stay, there were plenty of options for places to eat, including budget-friendly options. Finally, our hostel was nice, and we enjoyed getting back to our budget backpacking roots.
