Restaurants in Bratislava: Slovak Food, Bars & Beer
Bratislava has a good selection of restaurants, pubs and cafes, including traditional Slovak eateries, bars, bistros and a few higher-end options. We ate out several times during our visits to Bratislava and found plenty of places serving Slovak food, local beer and good-value meals.

For those travelling with pets, many places to eat out are dog-friendly. We found most accepted cards; however, some pubs were cash-only, so you might need to find an ATM.
Traditional Slovak Restaurants in Bratislava
These are details of the Slovak restaurants where I enjoyed dining out while sightseeing in Bratislava. Many of these specialised in traditional Slovak cuisine and beers.
Zylinder Cafe Restaurant

Near the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, Zylinder Cafe Restaurant, which serves traditional Slovak cuisine. It has an indoor dining area and outdoor seating in the shade of some gigantic trees.

For food, we ordered the highlighted special from their menu: Tafelspitz. Tafelspitz was advertised as ‘Your personal server will first serve, as is traditional.’ First up was marrow bone and grilled bread, followed by strong beef broth used to cook the Tafelspitz.

Along with vegetable and meat strudel. Finally, the boiled beef with creamed spinach, Austrian roasted grated potatoes, horseradish bread sauce, chive sauce and apple purée. The Tafelspitz was delicious and very filling, and a great dish for those who enjoy beef.
Café Restaurant Michaela
Near our hotel and the city’s market is Café Restaurant Michaela, a good-value eatery. They have an indoor dining area and a terrace overlooking the food markets. The staff here is friendly and provides excellent service. It has a selection of drinks, including some Czech and Slovak beers.

Their menu has some Slovak food, including some local specialities. I enjoyed a paprika-flavoured fish soup with a subtle kick.

For the main course at Cafe Restaurant Michaela, I enjoyed their Bryndzové halušky. Bryndzové halušky is a traditional Slovak dish made from potato dumplings and sheep’s cheese, topped with bacon. This was a hearty meal, and I left full.
Grandmother’s Restaurant

In Old Town, just down the hill from St Michael’s Gate, is Grandmother’s Restaurant, which serves traditional Slovak food. We visited with Henry, our dog, and they welcomed him. For starters, we tried Staroslovenská slepačia, a chicken soup.

My main course was a tasty goulash with dumplings. This restaurant is nicely decorated; they also serve some delightful local food. The must-try items on the restaurant’s menu are the goulash, soups and dumplings.
Factory Bratislava

Factory Bratislava is a restaurant in the city’s Old Town near St Michael’s Gate. It’s a contemporary eatery on a small side street with outdoor seating.

For beer, I drank a few glasses of Pilsner Urquell from the tank, which tasted excellent. For food, they have a selection of dishes on their menu, including Slovak specialities. I opted for the goulash with dumplings. The meat was tender, and the sauce was flavourful. They added bacon bits and spring onions, which worked and were tasty.
LINOS Bistro & Cafe
In the centre of Old Town Bratislava is LINOS Bistro & Coffee Shop. LINOS Bistro is centrally located and dog-friendly. This nicely decorated cafe/bistro has a very welcoming feel. At the front, the venue has tables for sit-down meals, and to the rear is an area with some very comfortable seating. In the summer months, LINOS also has an outside seating area for alfresco eating or coffee. The restaurant serves a variety of food types, including traditional Slovak dishes, burgers, and even pasta. Drinks include coffee, soft drinks, and some alcoholic beverages.

I tried the Bryndza-filled dumplings. Bryndza is a Slovak sheep’s milk cheese made mainly in Slovakia. It is also popular throughout other countries in the region. Bryndza cheese is creamy white and known for its characteristic strong smell and taste. The dumplings were filled with bryndza, baked bacon, and cream, and they were delicious.
Signature Bar & Lounge
Signature Bar & Lounge is inside the Clarion Congress Hotel in Bratislava. They have an à la carte menu. Signature Bar also has Slovak beer. I enjoyed a few beers with my meal.

After much deliberation, I enjoyed their pork loin. They cooked this with dark beer and paired it with creamy celery, crispy cracklings, and chervil. The food was tasty and the service great, so I highly recommend Signature for a meal out or drinks in a posh bar.
Bars and Beer in Bratislava
Zbrojnoš Pub

Located near Michael’s Gate in the Old Town is Zbrojnoš Pub. This is a live music pub at night and a quiet venue to drink during the day. Zbrojnoš pub is friendly and has good beer, including the delightful Pilsner Urquell. The bar has big, sturdy wooden tables and is quite dark with colourful lights.

This bar has a mysterious vibe, thanks to its interesting and colourful lighting. The drinks were reasonably priced for a half litre of Pilsner Urquell. The bar has a standing challenge: an international competition. You can win points for your country by finishing 10 drinks; competitors can also win a T-shirt.
Kollarko Bar

Kollarko Bar is a pub with a beer garden in a park and provides table service. At Kollarko Bar in Bratislava, we had some Slovak beer and some fresh lemonade. Both hit the spot, and the place was pleasant and quite cheap.
Franz Xaver Messerschmidt

Another cafe-bar we visited with Henry was the Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. They have an outside seating area with good views. Here we enjoyed some Slovak beer and coffee; both were great. They also serve food and a variety of cakes. On our visit, they offered Henry some water.
Hostinec Rýchlik

Near the train station is Hostinec Rýchlik, a good bar for a beer. They have a good selection of local beers and indoor and outdoor seating. To get served here, you need to go to the bar, which is a pleasant change in Central Europe. We visited with Henry, and they were fine with giving water as long as you had your own bowl.
International Food and Street Food
Bambus Vietnamese Bistro

One of my favourite international restaurants in Bratislava was Bambus Vietnamese Bistro. They are a small cafe near the railway station that specialises in Vietnamese food. They have a handy menu with photos on the walls. Their menu has well over 100 dishes, including pho, spring rolls, and other options.
Street Food & Cafe Possonium
A cool place for drinks or food is Street Food & Cafe Possonium. It’s a short walk from the train station and pretty cool. It’s a small version of Karavan in Budapest.

They have a bar and various food trucks serving street food. We ate their rice bowls and signature burgers.
